Ooit

Synopsis

OOIT is a poetic musical duet about decline, losing connection and becoming lost in loneliness.
Once, the two sisters were a celebrated classical music duo on cello and violin. They performed to packed concert halls all over the world. Money was no concern; they lived in luxury and abundance and had countless admirers. Now they are old. Their fame has faded. The money is gone.
In their shrinking world, the sisters find humour and comfort in each other as they try to conceal their decline. Together, they dream of their glory days and reminisce about the past, denying their deterioration in every possible way. But with faltering memories and trembling muscles, this is easier said than done.
In this production, the young theatre makers of Via Berlin immerse themselves in the lives of a much older generation — a group that has increasingly faded from view in our society.

Specially created for Bellevue Lunch theater Amsterdam 2016.

Reviews

“OOIT is at its strongest in the musical exchanges between its two protagonists. Through the tenderness with which the sisters help one another, and the outstanding musicianship of Slagmolen and Arnold, the sisters’ entire story becomes clear without words: the melancholy of looking back on their glory days, the minor irritations, the long-standing resentments, and the habitual way in which they support each other as their minds and bodies begin to fail.”

— Marijn Lems – Theaterkrant

“Director Paul van der Laan has turned it into a hilarious choreography. (…) OOIT is an entertaining hour of music theatre about the transience of everything.”

— Hans Smit – Het Parool
