Huis G.
Synopsis
HOUSE G. is a sensual, oppressive, and moving love story
that makes the viewer a witness to the many facets of an addictive relationship on the border between love and violence. The beautiful movement language of Laurent Delom de Mézerac and Dagmar Slagmolen draws the audience into the intense experience of this confronting love story. They are accompanied by a driving, hypnotic soundtrack, created live by improvisation masters Remco Menting and Oene van Geel. What causes lovers to become and remain entangled in a treacherous web of harmful behavioral patterns? What role does the outside world play in this, and when should you intervene as a bystander? These questions are exposed in a hallucinatory performance by Via Berlin in a virtuoso musical and dangerously sensual manner. Huis G. is alienating, unsettling, but also astonishingly recognizable. Scientific Research The questions asked during and after the performance in the theater are part of an official scientific study in collaboration with Radboud University in Nijmegen. If you would like to stay informed about the research and the results, please sign up for our newsletter at the bottom of the page. We also share the initial findings immediately during the post-performance discussion in multiple cities. In-depth Program Together with theaters and various social organizations (in Gouda, Nijmegen, Haarlem, Amsterdam, and Alkmaar), Via Berlin is organizing a larger in-depth contextual program surrounding the performance, consisting of workshops, a unique game, installations, film, insightful conversations, and artistic interventions. Together with the audience, specialists, care providers, and experts by experience, we examine complex relationships from the perspective of the bystander.
Premiered in the Ducth theaters in 2023, followed by 19 performances during the International Oerol theater festival 2024.
Reviews
"Huis G. excels in its associative visual language."— Theaterkrant
"Rock-solid and incredibly recognizable and important!"— Staff Veilig Thuis (expert organization)
""It gets under your skin and doesn't let go long after the performance.""
— Audience reaction"Not a word spoken; an entire history in dance and music, unparalleled!" — Audience Reaction Theater"You really must go to Huis G! That was truly so fantastic. So loving and so beautiful, but also so violent. And that is truly terrible to watch, but also so beautiful! And you hope so much that it turns out well.. I was very moved by it."
— Actress Monique van de Ven on Opium op Oerol (TV)"The fragile beauty of wordless love. Poetically performed mating dances executed as a sort of ritual. And all of this set to beautiful live music that amplifies or undermines the emotions. It creates a unique, fragile atmosphere of total surrender and an ultimately suffocating love relationship. Via Berlin is a company that wants to tell universal values, themes, and feelings in a decidedly stubborn way. Sometimes with words, sometimes without words, but always in the spotlight of beauty. Huis G. is a fine example of this!"— Friesch Dagblag
"In the expressive movement play, desire flows into threat.
Musicians Remco Menting and Oene van Geel create an exciting soundscape with their instruments and a large dose of technology."— Brabant Cultuur
"What a beautiful, oppressive, and breathtaking performance. And how the acting was in total unity with the location, the costumes, the set, and the music."
— Audience Reaction Oerol Festival
"What a fine piece of (necessary) art!!"
