Comfortzone

Synopsis

It is like an animal facing death: instinct takes over. There is no longer any room for carefree social moments; everything is on edge, and at any moment it could all be over.
A group of women are searching for something to hold on to in a time of confusion. They are swept along by their hostess, who proclaims a visionary view of the future. But when a refugee suddenly appears in their midst, an almost unbridgeable gap emerges between that beautiful vision of the future and the reality that has abruptly confronted them.

Dutch theatertour 2015.

Reviews

“It is remarkable that Comfortzone, a co-production by the young music theatre company Via Berlin, the Ragazze Quartet and the long-established Orkater, is so topical that it seems to have been written for the day after tomorrow rather than today. (…) At first, the actress and the other women welcome him with alarm and averted eyes, but gradually with increasing enthusiasm. At this point, the production becomes strikingly topical. The women are willing to take him in and give him the very best of themselves. Because giving, giving, giving, they believe, is not only good for the other person, but for yourself as well…”

“So you have taken a refugee into your home. After all, you see yourself as a good person, a blueprint for future generations. You want to ‘embrace the other’, as you proclaim at dinner parties. But then what? Well, it turns out there is an unbridgeable gap between easy idealism and unpredictable reality. This is the timely and provocative idea at the heart of Comfortzone.”
